In this paper, we explore a corpus of human-produced referring expressions to seetowhatextentwecanlearnthereferen- tial behaviour the corpus represents. De- spite a wide variation in the way subjects referacrossasetoftenstimuli, wedemon- strate that component elements of the re- ferring expression generation process ap- pear to generalise across participants to a significant degree. This leads us to pro- pose an alternative way of thinking of re- ferring expression generation, where each attribute in a description is provided by a separate heuristic.
