Distributional word similarity is most commonly perceived as a symmetric re- lation. Yet, one of its major applications is lexical expansion, which is generally asymmetric. This paper investigates the nature of directional (asymmetric) similar- ity measures, which aim to quantify distri- butional feature inclusion. We identify de- sired properties of such measures, specify a particular one based on averaged preci- sion, and demonstrate the empirical bene- fit of directional measures for expansion.
