We present CarmelTC, a novel hybrid text clas- sification approach for automatic essay grad- ing. Our evaluation demonstrates that the hy- brid CarmelTC approach outperforms two “bag of words” approaches, namely LSA and a Naive Bayes, as well as a purely symbolic approach.
