In this paper, we study a reformulation, which is better adapted to NLP, of the alternation system developed for English by B. Levin. We have studied a set of 1700 verbs from which we explain how verb semantic classes can be built in a systematic way. The quality of the re- sults w.r.t, semantic chLssifications such as WordNet is then evaluated. 1 Aims Predicative forms are complex to describe; it is indeed necessary to describe in detail their sym tactic behavior, the different meanings they may convey, preferably at different levels of granular- ity (e.g. argument structure, thematic grids, con- ceptual representations (aackendofr 90)), and the relations between syntactic forms and meaning(s) (Levin 93), (Williams 94).
