special purpose 'MT machines' by describing the syntax and semantics of a very basic notation for MT. We will make some assumptions about representa- tion and user languages for concreteness, but they will be simplified, and unrealistic in the main. Next we examine the model of translation by making expli- cit some of the theoretical commitments implicit in the notation, discussing some its attractions, and weaknesses, and sketching some possible remedies for the latter. Section 1 will present the notation, with some relevant background, section 2 will discuss the commitment the notation makes. L~_[EE_EELEE[_!,odel of translation.
