This paper describes a natural language interface developed for an expert system, Page-7~ The interface accepts English descriptions of observed symptoms and maps those descriptions to hypotheses used as initial input to the Page-X diagnosis system. The interface describes an application- independent linguistic interface and an application-specific hypothesis identification component. PROBLEM DESCRIPTION The natural language interface (NLI) we describe here makes up one part of the user interface to Page-X [STRA85], an expert system for the diagnosis of problems in non- impact page printers. To better understand some of our design decisions, it is useful to see the context in which this system was developed and deployed.
